Start off your year on a positive note by volunteering on Saturday 22 February 2025 in Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch.

Walk to Defeat MND brings communities together to walk in honour, memory, and in support of people affected by MND and raise awareness and much needed funds for research and support.

Walks vary between 2-3km, they are powerchair and pushchair friendly, fun for kids, and the dogs are welcome too. Walks are positive, powerful, colourful, community-building and life-affirming. People from all walks of life find strength together, united by their experiences with MND, with the shared purpose of creating hope for others.

Volunteering is a fantastic way to:
🌟 Support a meaningful cause
🤝 Connect with like-minded people
📈 Build valuable experience

Volunteering is a great way to meet like minded people or show your support for a meaningful cause. It’s also an opportunity to get experience, especially if you’re just entering the workforce!

You don’t need a personal connection to MND to join—just bring your enthusiasm to help create positive change. Whether you’re volunteering solo or with friends and whānau, this is a chance to be part of something special and strengthen your sense of purpose and community.

It has been proven that volunteering makes you feel good mentally, while giving you a sense of purpose and building strong community connection. It is a fulfilling activity you can do by yourself or with friends and whanau.

We’ve got a range of creative, operational or support roles you can sign up for, including:

  • Registration Lead – Be the friendly face that kicks off the event! You’ll oversee the registration area, guide your team, and make sure both pre sale ticket holders and on the day registrants are processed quickly.
  • Registration Hand – Help our walkers check in! You'll be there to greet participants, hand out materials, and keep the vibes positive and welcoming.
  • Merchandise Lead – Take charge of the merch table! You'll set up the display, manage inventory, and make sure everyone gets their hands on our awesome gear.
  • Merchandise Hand – Help keep the merch table running smoothly! You'll assist with sales, restock items, and make sure everyone leaves with a smile (and some cool merch).
  • Event Marshals – Keep the energy high and everyone on track! You'll be stationed along the route to provide directions, cheer on participants, carry a first aid kit, and may need to run to a scene to ensure everyone stays safe and motivated.
  • First Aider – Be ready to jump in if anyone needs medical attention! You'll carry a first aid kit, assist with minor injuries, and work with local emergency services if more help is needed.
  • MC – Be the voice of the event! You'll keep the energy up, make announcements, introduce speakers, and keep everyone informed about what's happening next. Your enthusiasm will keep the crowd engaged and excited.
  • Event Set up/Pack down – Be part of the behind-the-scenes magic! You'll help with setting up tents, tables, signage, and more before the event kicks off, and assist with packing everything away once it's all over.
  • Lead Walkers – You'll be at the front of the walk, keeping everyone on course and motivated. Your job is to keep spirits high and make sure the group moves together safely.
  • Tail Walkers – You'll walk at the back to make sure no one gets left behind, offering encouragement to anyone who needs it. Your role is to ensure everyone completes the walk safely and happily.
  • Photographer – Capture the magic of the day! You'll be responsible for taking photos of participants, volunteers, and key moments throughout the event. Your photos will help share the story of the walk and inspire others to get involved.
  • Sponsorship Coordinator – Get local businesses involved! You'll be reaching out to local shops and companies to encourage them to participate or support the event through sponsorships. Your efforts will help bring in vital resources and create community connections
