Supporting better care through education: Health professionals join us at the MND Study Day

At Motor Neurone Disease NZ, our mission is to make time count for people living with motor neurone disease (MND) through personal support, advocacy, education, and contributing to research.

One of the ways we bring that mission to life is by working alongside experienced health professionals to strengthen understanding of MND across the healthcare sector. When health professionals have access to the latest knowledge, practical tools, and opportunities to learn from one another, people living with MND are more likely to receive timely, coordinated, and person-centred care.

That's why we're pleased to be collaborating with our Middlemore and Auckland Hospital colleagues to deliver a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Study Day for health professionals on Friday 20 November 2026.

This full-day learning event will bring together a range of experts involved in MND care, including neurologists, respiratory physicians, gastroenterologists, therapists, and palliative care specialists. The programme is designed to explore the complexity of MND and share practical approaches to supporting people living with the condition.

Importantly, the day will also feature presentations from people with lived experience of MND. Their perspectives will help ground clinical knowledge in the realities of everyday life, highlighting the challenges, priorities, and experiences that matter most to people living with the disease and their family/whānau.

Alongside specialist presentations, attendees will have opportunities to engage in panel discussions and question-and-answer sessions, encouraging collaboration and deeper discussion about key issues in MND care.

For people living with MND and their families, this event reflects our commitment to advocacy, education, and improving care across Aotearoa New Zealand. While the study day is designed for health professionals, its purpose reaches far beyond the audience in the room. Every conversation, connection, and learning opportunity contributes to a stronger, more informed healthcare system that can better support people affected by MND.

We encourage health professionals from across disciplines and care settings to attend and be part of improving outcomes for people living with MND.

We also understand that the Centre for Brain Research is proposing to hold an MND research/health professional symposium on Thursday 19 November. Final details are yet to be confirmed.
