Motor Neurone Disease New Zealand (MND NZ) is pleased to announce the appointment of Shree Kumar as our new part-time Research Advisor.
Shree brings her strong biomedical science research background, with experience in neuroscience, cardiovascular research, and cell-based experimental models to the team. She also has extensive experience in research, policy, and advocacy, through her role as General Manager of the Waste Management Institute of New Zealand, alongside a range of other research and leadership roles.
In addition, Shree has held governance positions across the social profit sector, including with Auckland Sexual Abuse HELP Foundation, YWCA Waikato, and Kidz Social Services. Her work reflects her longstanding personal commitment to community wellbeing, social impact, and creating opportunities for people to thrive.
Shree has a personal connection to MND that has given her valuable insights into the disease.
“My connection to MND comes from supporting someone living with the condition, which gave me an appreciation of the impact it has not only on the individual, but also on their whānau, carers, and wider support network,” says Shree.
“I am drawn to organisations that strengthen communities and support people through challenging circumstances. I look forward to contributing to MND NZ’s important work and supporting the delivery of the 2025-2028 MND NZ Research Strategy.”
Moving to Aotearoa New Zealand in the early 2000s, Shree has been strongly connected to community organisations and local initiatives. A passionate advocate for mental health and wellbeing, she enjoys volunteering, kayaking, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
As Research Advisor, Shree will support MND NZ’s commitment to advancing research and improving outcomes for people living with MND across Aotearoa New Zealand as outlined in the 2025-2028 MND NZ Research Strategy.
