June 21: Kristy Renee x One NZ Warriors Ice Bucket Challenge

Community, Fundraising

11 June 2024

Kristy and her dad

When Kristy’s dad Kendall was diagnosed with MND in November 2019, it came as a shock to everyone. “He thought he had a knee injury, and we were expecting him to have surgery and be up and running in no time” recalls Kristy. But this was not to be.

The Wellington family managed to squeeze in one final family holiday around the South Island before the COVID pandemic hit in March 2020, and Kristy, who lives in the Bay of Islands, continued to visit, mostly by car, every second weekend. Kendall passed away in August 2020, surrounded by all his family and friends. “It’s a hard thing to accept at times, and getting past the memories of watching somebody go through that is a difficult process, but it also makes you appreciate things a lot more and want to make the most of what you have while you have it” says Kristy.

Inspired by her dad, Kristy did a small Ice Bucket Challenge a few years ago but has always dreamed of organising a big event and getting One NZ involved with the One NZ Warriors. “I just want to get awareness out there for people who are unaware of MND, and I want people going through their MND journey to know they are supported” says Kristy.

It has taken her over a year to pluck up her courage and approach One NZ, but once she did One NZ got behind the fundraiser and supported her all the way, along with MND NZ providing advice, support, and guidance.

“It’s been a really great experience and I’ve met some amazing people along the way. I was given the opportunity to do a promotional video with some of the Warriors, and that’s not something you get to do every day! It’s heartwarming to know there are so many people out there that care about this, and it’s a great feeling to know that you can do something to help”.

Meet the One NZ Warriors
Come along on Friday 21 June at 1:00 PM to Go Media Stadium where you’ll have your chance to get ice bucketed by one of the One NZ Warriors! To find out more or donate, visit https://mndactionmonth.org.nz/kristy-renee.

Double the Donation
The Te Rourou, One Aotearoa Foundation will double the amount we raise up to $10,000. The means if we raise $10k, we’ll actually be raising $20,000 for MND!
