Introducing the 2023/24 Annual Impact Report
Community, MND NZ
18 December 2024
At Motor Neurone Disease New Zealand (MND NZ), we are proud to reflect on a year marked by progress, resilience, and unwavering commitment to our community. The release of our 2023/24 Annual Impact Report offers a snapshot of the strides we’ve made, the challenges we’ve faced, and our vision for a brighter future.
A New Chapter of Leadership
This year, we welcomed Mark Leggett as our new Chief Executive. Mark brings a wealth of experience in the health sector, strategic planning, and senior leadership, coupled with a passion for making a difference. We are immensely grateful for the groundwork laid by Scott Arrol, whose efforts—such as leading our first parliamentary hui—helped reshape the narrative around MND.
Sustaining Support and Services
Despite staffing challenges, our dedicated MND Support Advisors continued to provide compassionate, face-to-face care across the country. Maintaining and growing this vital team remains a key priority moving forward, as we recognize that behind every act of support lies a foundation of financial and logistical resources.
Thanks to the continued generosity of Fulton Hogan, the MND Support Fund has enabled us to fill critical gaps in government funding for equipment and services. Additionally, the support from community trusts, donors, and fundraisers has been indispensable in helping us deliver services that cost nearly $1.2 million annually.
Community Fundraising Highlights
Our signature events—Walk to Defeat MND, Cup of Tea for MND, and the Ice Bucket Challenge—were incredible successes. These efforts, powered by the passion of those touched by MND, inspire us every day and remind us of the strength in community.
Advancing Research and Collaboration
This year, the MND NZ Registry transitioned to the University of Otago, where it continues to contribute to global research efforts. We’ve also strengthened our partnerships with the Lighthouse Trial in Australia and Dr. Emma Scotter’s team at the University of Auckland’s Centre for Brain Research, advancing our collective understanding of MND.
Looking Ahead
As we move forward, our focus remains on delivering compassionate, face-to-face support while expanding our reach through innovative technologies. We are committed to strengthening our partnerships, both locally and internationally, to ensure people living with MND and their families feel empowered, supported, and hopeful.
Together, we can continue making time count for those affected by motor neurone disease. Thank you for being part of our journey.
