Beyond Action Month : How you can get involved

Community, Events, Fundraising

19 August 2026

Get Involved (4)

During MND Action Month in June, people across the motu volunteered, fundraised, and supported the important work of MND NZ. Every day, that support helps us provide services, fund research, advocate for change, and educate New Zealanders about motor neurone disease (MND).

We couldn't do this without the amazing support we receive from you – our passionate fundraisers and supporters.

We have been asked recently, “How else can I get involved and support MND NZ?”. With so many amazing opportunities coming up in the next few months, there are heaps of ways to get involved…

Abel Tasman Trek for MND – Registrations closing soon!

Want to make a difference while setting a personal challenge for yourself? You can join our Abel Tasman Trek for MND but be quick – registrations close on 28 August!

Hike through the picturesque scenes of Abel Tasman National Park, where serene beaches, native forests, and historic mining routes await you. This 55km trek is not only a physical challenge, but a fundraising one. Our seven participants have collectively raised over $18,000 through a range of fundraising activities in the lead-up. It’s not too late to join this crew of individuals who are passionate about Making Time Count.

And if you need a sign to join, we are offering $1 registration (normally $390) with the code LASTCHANCE. Time to dust off those hiking boots that have been sitting in the corner!

Find out more information and grab your spot for the trek here

Volunteers wanted – Walk to Defeat MND

Here at MND NZ, we are gearing up for our Walk to Defeat MND events in Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington on 07 November. Walk to Defeat MND events always bring an amazing turnout of our community members, fundraisers, and supporters who participate in an accessible 2-3km walk, all while connecting with each other and creating memories.

We are now taking volunteer applications for all walk events. You can fill out our form here to apply. We have roles available for everyone, from assisting with our merchandise sales on the day, to cheering on participants as they walk the route. Our Walk to Defeat events rely on volunteers. It’s a rewarding way to support the MND community, meet new people, and help make the day a success.

You can fill out the volunteer form here and let us know which event you're keen to help with.

Volunteers wanted – Homes of Devonport

MND NZ is delighted to announce we are a charity partner for this year’s Homes of Devonport event, brought to life by the Devonport Rotary Club. Explore a unique opportunity to view some of the area’s historic and character homes in this annual tour.

We are seeking volunteers to work a morning shift (9am -12.30pm) or an afternoon shift (12.30pm – 4pm) for this event, assisting with showcasing the homes on the tour. Volunteers receive a complimentary ticket to the event, which can be used outside of the volunteer shift. Let us know in our volunteer form here if you would be interested in helping at this community event.

The tour takes place on 13 November 2026 and you can purchase your tickets through the link here. Don’t miss out on this sell-out event that showcases some of the most unique architecture on the North Shore, all for a good cause.

Volunteers wanted – Ellerslie Car Show

Are you a car aficionado? If so, you’re in luck, as MND NZ is excited to be an official charity partner for the 2027 Classic Cover Ellerslie Car Show on 14 February 2027 at the Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland. One of the country’s biggest displays of classic cars, the car show hosts a range of vehicles from the early 1900s, to modern exotic cars.

MND NZ is delighted to have a stand for donations and spreading awareness of our cause, and we are seeking volunteers to assist with the event. You can fill out our volunteer form here and let us know what skills you can bring on the day. A passion for cars is an added bonus but not a requirement!

Fundraiser spotlight – Al Rynn

All year-round, we have dedicated fundraisers who choose to put their own spin on community fundraising. From bake sales to online gaming, there is no cap on how creative you can be with fundraising for MND NZ.

Last month, Al Rynn completed a 1,285-kilometre bike ride from Auckland to his home in Mārahau, after receiving an MND diagnosis in late 2025. An avid cyclist, Al wanted to explore parts of Aotearoa he had not yet ridden while he is still physically able to do so. With the support of his family, community, and people around the world, Al raised more than $17,300 while completing this special, deeply personal ride.

Supporters like Al make our advocacy, research, and education work possible.
