Tips to help you get through the COVID-19 lockdown
Covid-19
7 April 2020
There's no doubt that things are pretty challenging for most people at the moment. With any luck, we're nearly halfway through the lockdown to combat the spread of COVID-19.
Adapting to this new, albeit temporary situation is a resilience test for everyone. For some, suddenly being housebound may feel restrictive. For those who are used to being at home a lot, it may be difficult having routines disrupted with family members in your space more than usual.
Everyone needs a little inspiration, so we've put together a few tips on how you and your fellow bubble-dwellers can get through the remaining few weeks as smoothly as possible.
You might have heard the phrase he waka eke noa – we're all in this together. It's really important to remember that while physical distancing is key at the moment, remaining socially connected is vital. Take the time to catch up via phone or video call with family, wave to a neighbour or send a text to a friend.
At the moment, the news is full of COVID-19 updates, and this can feel overwhelming. Remember that it's ok to give yourself a break from the news or social media when this happens. Carefully select the type of news articles you read or watch and ask others to limit their talk about COVID-19 when they are around you. If you want an update on the facts, visit the Government's COVID-19 response site here.
Find some time and space for yourself, whether that's reading a book, trying out a new hobby or watching a favourite movie – again!
If you need a listening ear or just want a familiar voice to talk to, your MND Support Team Member is available for a chat. If you're struggling and need to talk to someone, you can also text 1737 at any time, day or night, to connect with a trained counsellor.
Getting access to essential supplies like groceries can be a bit tricky at the moment, but here's a couple of websites that may help:  https://delivereat.co.nz/  is a handy list of food and drink providers providing home delivery during lockdown, with links to each business's website. The list is updated daily, so you can be sure that information is current. Sometimes your nominated household shopper may need to visit the supermarket. This website, https://howlongistheline.org helps you to gauge wait times at supermarkets all over New Zealand.
We hope these tips help life in your bubble go a little more smoothly. Stay safe, stay connected. We've got this New Zealand!
