COVID-19 Alert Level Two – what you need to know

Covid-19

13 May 2020

covid19update

Tomorrow New Zealand moves to Alert Level Two. It has been a long and challenging journey, so the easing of restrictions will be a relief to many, but the golden rule for Alert Level Two is to play it safe. We’re not out of the woods yet, and it’s important to remain vigilant, especially for those who are vulnerable.

Life at Alert Level two is not ‘business as usual’ – some restrictions remain in place to ensure the continued safety of New Zealanders. At Alert Level two, the disease is contained, but the risk of community transmission still remains. This move means we can recommence many of our everyday activities — but we have to do so safely. If you’re wondering what moving to level two means for people living with MND and their families, we’ve put together some advice to help you manage the transition safely.

As during previous alert levels, practising good hygiene continues to be vital especially as you interact with more people, and have visitors come into your space. It’s recommended that those who are more vulnerable, and their household members remain at home as much as possible. Keep contact with others to close family members and those necessary for your healthcare.

During level two, care workers may resume coming to your home. We know there has been concern over PPE for care workers recently, and we’re pleased to share the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health around this, available here.

Hospital services will be increasing, and more clinic appointments will be offered, but it may still be possible for you to have clinic appointments via video conferencing or phone if this is your preference. Discuss this with your health care team when you receive notification of your appointment.

The Ministry of Health has let us know they will be updating their advice for disabled people for level two shortly, so keep an eye on their website here for further information. The official New Zealand Government COVID-19 website also has advice for vulnerable people to follow during Alert Level Two, available here

At MND New Zealand, we have decided that at this stage, we will continue to operate our support service in the same way as it has been for levels four and three. Your health and wellbeing are of utmost importance to us, and we believe that this is the best way to safely provide support and assistance for the time being.

As we have been for the past seven weeks, we will continue to be available to our MND community by email, text, phone or video call. We will keep you updated with any proposed changes to our service.

So to recap, continue practising good hygiene and stay home where possible, restricting contact with others as much as you can. As always, we’re here to answer questions and support you, so get in touch if you’d like to chat.
